This is a side handle baton.  Each kata with the exception of Oyata no Tonfa have the baton held by the handle only.  Oyata no Tonfa at times has the handle held by the long portion.  Lisa Ohmes was working on Oyata no Tonfa before Taika passed away.  Regrettably that unique kata was not finished.  Lisa has preserved what was taught as a series of exercises.
